Senior Chaplain.
Humor, wit and mirth divorced
from vulgarity, obscenity and
crudeness are most valuable assets
worthy of cultivation. Seriousness
has its place but most of us are
inclined to be too serious.
Unfortunate indeed is that in-
dividual who has not learned to
play and laugh and to appreciate
wholesome fun. There is truth in
the short couplet:
"Laugh and the world laughs with
you;
Weep and you weep alone."
We appreciate the position of the
man who is down but not· out-
fighting against great odds-
bruised and buffeted by fate-but
coming up with a smile.
"For the man worth while
Is the man who can smile
When everything goes dead
wrong."
It was Thomas Carlyle who said :
"A man who has once heartily and
wholly laughed cannot be alto-
gether and irreclaimably bad . . .
How much lies in laughter! It is
the cipher-key whereby we decipher
the whole man. The man who can-
not laugh is not only fit for
treasons, strategems and spoils; but
his whole life is already a treason
and a stratagem."
That man who is able to smile at
